quiche

the current trend regarding food in my life is that i've been craving items that i never usually enjoy. for example, i've bought more chocolate in the past month than i have in the past year! the same has applied to other foods, and one of my recent cravings has been quiche.

it all started with walking past the canteen near class, and having heard that it's quite cheap, i decided to pop in and take a look. i noticed that there were quiches offered with a salad, so i figured i'd give it a chance, since i hadn't eaten quiche in over 3 years.

they microwaved my red onion quiche for me, and i added a side of potato salad. the whole order was only £2.50, perfect for a starving uni student.

i thought it was actually quite good; the inside was relatively firm, and there wasn't a very eggy smell to it. the pastry crust wasn't spectacular, but hey - what do you expect for £2.50? the potato salad was the weirdest i've never had. i'm not sure if it's just because i got it from the canteen, or if it was British style..but it tasteless except for a very strong mayo / cream flavour. ick. the fact that they put it a) on top of salad greens, which added extra water to the potatoes and b) put the hot quiche next to it and made it a weird combo of hot and cold didn't make it any better.

having not satisfied that craving, i decided to get some more at sainsbury's. it's £2 for a ready-made box, and all you have to do it pop it into the oven for 20 some odd minutes. i chose the mediterranean style quiche, which has red peppers and other vegetables smattered inside.

can you guess? i wasn't too pleased. first, i heated it exactly for how long it said on the box, and the crust was already burnt. secondly, it was way, way too watery. not good. the insides tasted like tofu..i was quite upset. the only thing i kinda liked was the pastry crust, but then again, i always love pastry crusts.

finally, the highlight of my quiche explorations: jambon quiche in Paris. i ate this at a little café near the Louvre, and it came with a side salad and some bread for €10. a little pricey, but it's Paris..

this was the best quiche i've ever had in my life. seriously. it was just the right texture and consistency - creamy, yet not mushy or runny. i loved it!

there were bits and pieces of ham embedded near the bottom,  and to my surprise, it wasn't too salty!

i took the smallest bite i could in order to savour each bite haha (:

the side salad came with dressing already on it, which i wasn't too pleased about..

...and the fact that the dressing had horseradish in it made me even less pleased since i really don't like the taste. still, i finished it because it was the only source of veggies i'd had all day.

i also blogged about my final quiche that i had in Paris in a previous post regarding all the Parisian foods i'd had. can you believe i had it 4 times within one week? i'm surprised i'm still not sick of it! alas, no more fresh ones from Paris for a while though. i'll have to figure something else out, because the sainsbury one just isn't cutting it for me.
