Roy's Hawaiian

i actually ate here a while ago, but i never had the chance to post up pictures! and trust me, this place is worth blogging about (: Roy's is probably one of my favourite restaurants to visit whenever i'm in the mood for good fish and a cute atmosphere. the Chicago branch has the option to sit either at the chef's counter, or to get a normal table; i've had the pleasure of trying both experiences and they were both great! obviously if you're a foodie or love watching chefs works (and don't mind the excess noise), i'd definitely try the chef's counter at least once.

the more i think about this meal, the happier (and hungrier) i am getting! (:

we started the meal off with crunchy golden lobster potstickers ($10.95).

it's definitely a fusion dish - the sauce is creamier than what normal Asian potstickers would come with, but it was still very nice. the filling was pretty rich as well - definitely get this to share haha.

we also tried Auntie Lei's aloha roll ($13.50).

i was pleasantly surprised at how good the sushi was here! i expected it to be kinda mediocre, since most people probably don't come to Roy's for sushi. the roll had spicy tuna, kaiware, & cucumber, and was covered with pieces of salmon, avocado, and yellowtail. super fresh, super yum!

even with these dishes, i had to make room for Roy's classic roasted macadamia nut crusted Mahi Mahi ($28.95).

let me just say .. oh my gosh it was good! the title itself is quite a mouthful, but as soon as the dish arrived at the table i completely fell in love. the mahi mahi was grilled perfectly & was very juicy; the sauce was SO creamy and good (lobster cognac butter sauce - hello heart attack and blocked arteries!). as you can see from the picture, they give you TWO filets - a great deal for the price!

Roy's is also super famous for their Hawaiian style misoyaki butterfish ($29.95).

it's a sweeter dish, whereas the mahi mahi was definitely on the savoury side. however, it's still quite enjoyable, and the fish really just melts in your mouth!

finally, the highlight of my entire evening - no joke..

pineapple upside-down cake with toasted coconut ice cream.

i'm personally not a fan of pineapple upside-down cakes.. generally i think they look rather gross and taste kind of strange. but this one.. YOU MUST TRY IT. i can hardly think of another time where a dessert has made my meal so, so complete. the toasted coconut ice cream is divine..i don't even know where to begin. the cake wasn't soggy in the least bit - in fact, it was moist but chewy, and just an explosion of happiness in your mouth.

i checked out the online menus for this winter and there seems to have been some shifting around of food items.. i'm not sure if the dessert is still available (PLEASE SAY YES, ROY'S!) because there's a lot of adverts for Leslie's Warm Strawberry Guava Tart (since it has my name in it i think i must go and try it!). also, they do work from a seasonal and regional standpoint, so chances are if you're in Hawaii or the West Coast, you will have even more choices (:
